Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War Card Game Review

The Imperium and the Rebels have been battling each other for control over the galaxy, but things are about to get even more messy in Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War. In addition, the Alien departure point has been found, and the Uplift Overseers are starting to get restless. In these troubled times when war is just a hair’s breadth away, galactic prestige and influence become all the more important as you try to gain control of the galaxy.

Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War is the 3rd expansion for the hit card game, following the first two expansions The Gathering Storm and Rebel vs Imperium. It requires the base game as well as both previous expansions in order to play. This review is focused on the new concepts introduced in the Brink of War expansion. If you want to know more about how the base game is played, please read our Race for the Galaxy review.

This expansion follows on from the previous Rebel vs Imperium expansion, where military might was starting to get mobilized and the galactic Imperium was being harassed by the rebels in small skirmishes. Tensions are getting high now though, and the galaxy is on the Brink of War. In troubled times like these, the galaxy looks up to those that hold galactic prestige: the worlds and corporations that have the greatest influence. It’s these prestige leaders who will decide whether the galaxy will prosper or be thrown into war.

The main new mechanic introduced in Brink of War is the prestige system, a new method to achieve victory. Every turn, the player with the most prestige gain an additional victory point. And if this prestige leader gained prestige that turn, they also get to draw a card. Letting a player keep the prestige lead uncontested will basically mean handing them a whole chunk of victory points and free cards. Existing game plans will therefore have to change to accommodate this. If you can’t be the prestige leader, you’ll have to either make sure others can’t maintain that lead, or earn a lot of additional victory points to overcome the prestige leader’s victory point bonus.

So how do you earn prestige? A large number of the cards introduced in this set have the prestige symbol located next to their cost value. These cards (both worlds and developments) will earn you a prestige token when you play them. There are also new abilities that produce prestige tokens. Examples include an explore ability that lets you discard a card to gain a prestige token, and a consume ability that lets you consume an alien good for a prestige token instead of victory points.

There is also another major new mechanic introduced in Brink of War: the Prestige/Search card. This card provides every player with a powerful boost that can only be used once per game. Players can choose the Prestige portion of the card by paying one prestige token when you reveal your role card. That role card then becomes “super-charged” with the relevant ability on the Prestige/Search card. For example, you can consume goods for an additional victory point, or you can settle a world for 3 cards less or with 2 extra military power.

The Search part of the card is equally powerful. Once a game, you can use the card to search the deck for a particular type of card. You choose one of 9 categories (such as a 1- or 2-cost world, or an alien world, or a 6-cost development) and you get to reveal cards from the deck until you reach a card that satisfies the conditions of the category you chose. You then get to put that card into your hand. This is a good way to hopefully find a 6-cost development that will give you the victory points to win the game. More importantly, this card also helps if your initial hand is really bad, allowing you to search for cards that will help you get your engine going. In effect, it is like a “mulligan” that compensates for a bad draw and keeps you in the race.

There are also plenty of cards with new abilities, as well as new Alien and Uplift cards. Overall, Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War is a great expansion set that introduces interesting new concepts and mechanics to keep the game fresh and exciting. Existing strategies are shaken up as players adjust their game plans to accommodate the new prestige system. Do note that the base set and both previous expansions are required to play Brink of War.

Poker is a thrilling casino game that attracts many people as it is straightforward to play. Undoubtedly it requires fortune and to win in the long run you have to know the rules of the game thoroughly. To cover up the basics Texas Hold’em is the popular poker version that is played almost every where and it is a group gambling with each player forming the best five card combination. There are four suits and the cards are numbered commencing from 1 to10, with J, Q, K and A in a deck of 52 cards. Around 10 poker hand orders are followed and all of them are given below listed according to their corresponding weight factor.

The royal flush is a combination of 10, J, Q, K, A from the same suit.
Numbers grouped according to the numeral series like 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or any others is called the straight flush. The important point here is all cards should belong to the same suit.
Quads are nothing but a group of four cards with same value. For example: all 5′s
Full house is when the player combines three cards of same value and two cards of identical number. For instance it is like grouping three 4′s and two 6′s. If more than one player displays a full house the highest combination wins.
A simple flush is a group of 5 cards in the same suit. Again if more than one player show cases flush then the top most combination wins.
Straight is similarly a group of five cards from different suits and three of a kind is three cards according to the number series from different suits.
Correspondingly two pairs of card with same value and one pair of card with same value are called the two pair and one pair respectively.

When no pairs are found among the players the one with the highest card value wins the pot. These are the rankings in the order of the best to the worst.

Creating a new card game can be as easy as taking an old card game and changing some of the rules. Just look at Hearts.

Hearts is a trick-taking card game for three to six players. It is best played with four players. The object of the game is to avoid taking Heart cards in tricks.

For each hand, the cards are dealt one at a time face-down around the circle as far as they will go equally. Extra cards are laid aside, unseen. The player with the Two of Clubs then becomes the first lead player.

The lead player lays down a card, and each player in turn moving clockwise around the circle lays down a card. Those cards must match the suit of the lead card if possible. The player playing the highest card in the suit that was lead takes the trick, and leads to the next trick. A Heart card cannot be lead until one has been played that does not match the lead card.

Heart cards taken in tricks each score a point. The player with lowest score when another player’s score reaches 100 wins the game.

New rules have been added over time to create new Hearts card games. A three card pass was added after the deal and before play. You pass three cards to a player, and a player passes three cards to you.

Another rule commonly called ‘Shoot the Moon’ was added. With this rule, if you take all scoring cards during a hand, you score zero points, and each of the other players score the total of all scoring cards in play. Or you subtract the total of all scoring cards from your current score.

One new rule made the Queen of Spades a scoring card worth 13 points, while another new rule made the Ten of Diamonds a scoring card worth minus-10 points.

With new rules came new names for some of these games. People now play Black Queen or Omnibus Hearts instead of Hearts.

So what can you do to create a new Hearts game?

You could change the rules to make all of the red cards scoring cards. Heart and Diamond cards would each score 1 point. Or you could make Heart cards each score 1 point, and Diamond cards each score minus-1 point.

Or you could change the rules so that the Two through Nine of Hearts each score two points, while keeping the Ten through Ace of Hearts each scoring one point.

Or you could add some rules from Crazy Eights to make Hearts more interesting. You could play a card with the same rank as the card laid down by the player to your right, no matter what the lead suit was. And you could play an Eight and change the suit of the lead card. (The Eight would belong to the new suit.)

Or you could change the criteria for winning the game. The player with the second-lowest score when another player’s score reaches 100 wins the game.

Poker: the Essentials of Poker Hands

Have you ever tried playing poker? If yes, you are probably familiar with the term poker hands but if not, well this is your chance to learn the truth about poker hands.

Poker hands are the term used whenever a person or someone has 5 cards dealt in their deck. There is a certain ranking for these poker hands and not the usual ranking like one, two, and three. There are different rankings used for poker hands just like in a regular card game.

Here are some of the rankings of poker hands. The first ranking would be the high card. These are the type of poker hands that are ranked by the value of their highest card. For example, your poker hands are 7, 6, and 5, then 7 would be the highest and so forth. If your poker hands have the same value, it is then ranked as the next highest. The next type of ranking for poker hands would be pairs. As the word implies, 2 out of the 5 cards in the poker hands must have the same value. The next type of ranking for poker hands would be two pairs. This type of ranking for poker hands consists of two different pairs. The next type is called three of a kind wherein three out of the five cards in one’s poker hands are the same. Another type of ranking is called a straight wherein the cards in the poker hands contain 5 consecutive values which is ranked according to the rule of the highest card. The next kind of ranking or classification of poker hands is called flush. This kind of flush is not related to the ordinary flush that we know. A flush is formed when all the cards (five cards) in the poker hands are of the same suit or classification (e.g. five hearts or five spades). The next type is called a full house wherein three out of the five cards in the poker hands are of the same value while the remaining two are a pair. The next kind of ranking for poker hands is called four of a kind. As the name suggests, four of a kind is when four of the five cards in the poker hands are of the same value and it is also ranked by the value of the 4 cards. The next type of ranking or classification of poker hands is called a straight flush. It is a combination of straight and flush hence the name. Sounds confusing? It is actually easy; here the cards of the poker hands have the same suit with consecutive values. The last and the best classification of poker hands is called the Royal flush wherein all the best cards which is comprised of Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 are all in the same suit.

Is it still hard to grasp? Well, a little visualization could help you envision the different ranking of poker hands. Take a look at the following examples:

High Card – 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7

Pair – 4, 4 and 6, 6

Two Pairs – 3, 3 and Spade, Spade

Three of a kind – 7, 7, 7 or King, King, King

Straight – 9 of diamonds (5, 6, 7, 8, and 9)

Flush – All king of Spades (4, 5, 6, 7, and

Four of a Kind – 8, 8, 8, 8 or Queen, Queen, Queen, Queen

Straight Flush – 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Diamonds

Royal Flush – Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 of Diamonds

Fantasy Card Games: Decreasingly Popular

I wanted to invest in magic games when I was young.  They often provided a way to feel adventurous.  Naturally they introduced me to computer games and I would guess that this is a common story for other gamers.  Regardless of the fact that I felt encouraged to enjoy these by school, some shame was felt when ever I played.

Fantasy card games vs. electronic gaming

Among the well-known fantasy card games on the market in the last 15 years that I’ve played are Lord of the Rings TCG, Magic the Gathering, and Digimon.  A majority of these have been unfortunately programmed into video games.  I don’t hate video games for the reason that they are a cousin to physical games, as both of them are a product of duplicate ideas; despite this, they both create unique results in lifestyle.  Perhaps it’s important to say that the financial side of either is pretty much the same.  To compare publishing of video games to fantasy card games; in 2005, 1130 digital games and 24 fantasy card games were released.  I gathered this information from wikipedia.org and gamesarefun.com.

Encouraged by More than Peers

Maybe it’s do to the fact that fantasy card games improve healthy competition and problem solving that I have memories of being encouraged to play board games by my family while still very young, and was even cheered for when I volunteered to be the score keeper.  I remember an assignment during elementary school from my math teacher to think of a board game.  This was the first and undoubtably the last time I ran home excited to begin an assignment.  What I designed was of course my first of what became lots of fantasy card games.  This was the nudge to begin a long road for me, because I kept on creating, even though the bulk of what I thought of was dismissed.  Besides playing fantasy card games, teachers encouraged reading and writing fantasy books including The BFG and the Redwall series.  Computer games still win out over books since there are approximately 9000 titles listed on isbndb.com for the fantasy genre, but 25 thousand games on gamesarefun.com.

Fantasy is increasingly popular as a genre for movies over the past two decades.  According to listings at imdb.com, the ratio of fantasy productions among all feature films was one out of 57 before the 90′s and has expanded to 1/26 and 1/23 from ’91 to 2000 and from 2001-present respectively.  Despite this rising popularity it seems to me that fantasy card games are stubornly labeled as ‘nerdy’.  This fact doesn’t go unnoticed by gamers who play fantasy card games.  My own friends can be divided into 2 groups of players; the quiet and probably ashamed gamers, and the proud promoters of the cause.  While one group will larp around the playground, the other sticks himself out of the way and conceals the title of the book he’s reading.

In part writing this is my attempt to escape from the group I have always been in and become one of those who openly embrace fantasy card games.  I am excited for when we can all let go of the stereotype that fantasy is acceptable in digital games and film, but a reason for rejection in board games.  But my real objective is for all of us to turn off the computer screen and learn to enjoy something better.

Counterfeiting Winning Hold ‘Em Poker Hands

There are some interesting phenomena in looking at hand rankings of  Hold em poker hands. One of these is known as counterfeiting.  When it happens, it feels like you had a winner and then at the last moment, your hand turns to garbage. Wonder how that could happen?

Your odds of winning a hand of Hold ‘Em are reduced the more people there are at the table.  First we’ll look at the Texas Holdem hand rankings.

Royal Flush

A, K, Q, J, 10

Straight Flush

3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (in order, suited)

Four-of-a-Kind

5, 5, 5, 5, x (or four of any number/face)

Full House

7, 7, 7, 9, 9 (any 3/2 combination)

Flush

4, 5, 6, J, K (suited, any number/face)

Straight

3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (unsuited, in order)

Three-of-a-Kind

10, 10, 10, 4, 5 (any number that matches)

Two Pair

6, 6, 2, 2 (any numbers that match)

One Pair

8, 8 (any number that matches)

Now, you can see that having a straight that contains an Ace is a pretty desirable hand to hold. But what if your hand was 2, 3, 4, 5?  It’s simple, put the Ace at the low end of the hand and you have a straight, A, 2, 3, 4, 5. Wonderful! But then…out of the blue comes a lowly little 6. Now a 6 isn’t going to harm most hands…but in this case, it just gave you the weakest straight. That, my friend, is called counterfeiting.

To stay ahead of a losing streak in Hold ‘Em, you want to play the odds. When you are dealt a hand, the first thing you want to do is to calculate the number of outs you have. These are the opportunities you have to improve your hand. For example, if you are holding 3,3,8, you have two outs, another 3 or an 8.  Pulling another eight will only result in still having a pair, but it’s a stronger pair than the 3s present. Pulling another 3, however, will give you a set, or three-of-a-kind, which definitely beats a pair of anything, including Aces. The more outs you have, the better hand you’re holding because you have more opportunities to make a stronger Hold ‘Em hand.

Everything in Vegas runs on odds, and they’re always slanted toward the casino. Hold ‘Em is one of the few games where you can actually come out ahead simply because in this case the casino takes a percentage up front; you are therefore encouraged to win. You only need see all the prosperity in towns like Vegas to recognize that they are very successful in following the odds, and you will be likewise. Leave gut instinct and luck to the losers.

Poker has appealing and exciting terms when playing a combination of hands.  Beginners may not be able to make sense of it, because the names itself will be quite confusing to them. Just to give an example an Aces Full Hand implies that the player has a full house comprising of three aces in combination with other pair of cards.

By comprehending how every individual player bets, one gets a deeper insight on the way the hand unfolds.  If the player is moving his cards, we may not be able to exactly know the cards the player is holding.  By concentrating on every move made by the opposite player, you will definitely get an idea of the cards and will be able to grasp more about the game and also how bets are placed at the table.

Positioning has an important role to play in winning poker hands.  If the player plays good hands in early position, it is a signal that the player has definitely a strong hand.  Hence, the opposite player needs to re-evaluate his or her strategy.  One also needs to learn from every betting round.  One needs to quickly take a mental note of what the opposite player is going to play depending upon their behaviour.  

Keep making smart decisions and betting right. Mental updation of your analysis after every round will be of real help for making the right decisions at every possible stage of the game.  The best way to arrive at the optimum strategy is to create a full narrative of every betting round.

The most frustrating thing of the game is finding out which hand is better than the other at the poker table. The Royal Flush is a five card sequence beginning from 10 going to the Ace.  In straight flush, you have the sequence of any five cards of the same suit and are consecutive.  

When it is a four of a kind situation, it implies four cards carrying the same index. A full house indicates three of the same kind with a pair.  When there are five cards which are not in sequence but of the same suit, then it means a flush.  If there are two or more players having a flush, then the player with the high card emerges the winner.

Learning the poker hands is probably one of the most important skills in playing poker. In every poker game each player makes up a hand of 5 cards, the player with the best hand wins the game and the pot of money.

Here is a breakdown of the poker hands. They are shown in ranking order, and so the top hand beats the lower hands.

Straight Flush – within this hand the five cards follow in sequence and they need to be of the same suit. If in a poker hand 2 or more players have a Straight Flush the hand with the higher cards within the Straight Flush wins the game. A Royal Flush is the highest hand you can get and it consists of Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 all of the same suit.

Four of a Kind – is a hand of 4 cards of the same number and of different suits and one unmatched card. The higher the cards the better the hand, and so if 2 or more players have a four of a kind hand the player with the higher cards wins over the lower card four of a kind.

Full House – a full house is where you have 3 cards the same rank and different suit and 2 cards the same rank and different suit. With this hand the cards that are higher in the set of 3 cards wins and so for example 7,7,7,2,2 beats 5,5,5,King,King.

Flush – a flush is a set of 5 cards all of the same suit but not in sequence. Higher cards within the flush hand beats a lower hand of flush cards. For example all hearts Jack,8,4,2,Ace would beat all clubs 9,7,5,3,Ace. The flush is described by their highest card and so a Jack flush or a Queen high flush for example.
